Coalbed methane is created during coalification, the process by which plant material is converted into coal. Coalbed methane consists of methane (95%) with possibly some carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Because coalbed methane contains few, if any, impurities it requires minimal processing. It is a clean-burning fuel and is more environmentally friendly than conventional natural gas or oil.
